After 30 years, Renton's Value Village will be closing down next week
Value Village in Renton will be closinng its doors next weekend. The Picaroon has run a thorough article about the closure that you can find by clicking HERE.

I'll be very sorry to see this store close it's doors. I've always felt they did an excellent job of managing the store and it's "previously-owned" merchandise for sale-- a very high quality second-hand store. And I was surprised to hear of this business closure. I would have thought that they might have weathered the bad financial climate better than others because of the nature of the store and their extremely low prices. But times are really tough for local business.

My best wishes to all of the staff at Value Village, and my thanks to each and every one of them for running a great business for 30 years.

My favorite store!!! My daughter never had a new pair of jeans because Value Village always provided! ((In Arizona, they are called Savers)) Always clean, sorted by color, reasonable.

Thank them for me, too!

I'm excited about the possibilities for that space. Trade Joe's?

Not too sure another store in a crappy market is prudent for anyone. I don't spend my money on anything but the basics anymore until we get out of this quagmire. So I plan on not spending much for the next 3 years until we throw grown up Webster out.

I've been told that Value Villin is sort of a scam - they setup two captive charities to get donations and the private company (Value Village) makes all the profit.

This was how it was explained to me, and why you should by from St. Vincent and Goodwill.

My educated guess is this: Value Village is doing great in this economy. The lease is up soon. The landlord seeing that the business is rocking, raises the price of the lease. Value Village decides to look for a better, more updated building with a better location and parking. Commercial real estate is about to collapse, and this provides more bargaining power to VV. I wouldn't be surprised to see it pop up somewhere else in Renton very soon. VV is a highly profitable business. They have 10,000 employees and had almost 120 million in sales last year. TCC

Value Village
They priced themselves out of business. Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer or K-Mart have cheaper prices for new merchandise. I haven't shopped at Value Village since I too found out they are a for profit, not charity. I'm sure it will be a nails/PHO/church combo. It seems to be where Renton is heading.

TJ's
Would everyone give up on the Trader Joe's already? They have made it abundantly clear that they do not want to come to Renton!

Re: TJ's
There will be little if any business growth in the next 2+ years due to the depression we are in. 20%+ unemployment (on the dole and those whose benefits have expired).

Re: TJ's
Actually, they have been abundantly quiet on the matter. I think there was one quote from several years ago that Renton wasn't in their plans at the time, but they assess demand from time to time, blah blah blah.

If people keep requesting it, it might come.

Re: TJ's
I work there... unfortunately, our company hasn't stated anything on the matter in regards to coming to Renton. Sad too, because It sure would be nice to not have to drive to Issaquah every time I want to buy something on my day off!

According to a Times story, the store was one of their smallest and had very unique challenges. It definitely sounded like they would likely find another space at some point in time. Business there is certainly not down.

Which business is not down? Trader Joe's, no idea. In general, that would be an ignorant statement to make unless people are expected to spend hope for food and necessities.
