I had to miss the Monday council meeting to coordinate some airplane stuff (my day job) in Kansas. But I got this very amusing note from my esteemed colleague Rich Zwicker (pictured in header), to inform me that thanks to his Churchill-like "oratory style," Rich succeeded in getting me elected to Council President in my absence. I'm not sure if the city's official press release would include these flowery details, so I'm giving you Rich's note below! :-)
(Actually, my election to President was pretty predictable, as the President pro-tem (which I have served as during 2008) typically progresses to President the next year. The more significant election was therefore that of Don Persson to Council President Pro-Tem. This will in all likelihood put him in the role of council president in 2010. Don is a natural leader, highly regarded in our community, and it will be fun to work with him in council leadership again)
Here is Rich's note:

In an Obama-like landslide, you were elected Council President at Monday night's Renton City Council Meeting. Obviously moved by Councilmember Zwicker's oratory style, a style some say has not been seen since Winston Churchill, while reading your letter to the Council into the record, the vote sending you into the Presidency was unanimous. Soon thereafter, Councilmember Persson rode the fevered passions of the Council and audience to a win in the election of Council President Pro-tem. It was an amazing evening.
Congrats!! You deserve it and I look forward to serving under you next year.
- Rich.
