A great performance by two American stars; Jazz great Louis Armstrong and singer/actor (and first Seattle Mariners owner) Danny Kaye.

As we hit the last 30 days of the campaign, with mud flying everywhere, I thought a pick-me-up would be nice. I've loved this song since I was a little boy, and no one performs it better than the writer's own son Arlo, supported by American folk legend Pete Seeger. They still perform it together in concert today. Here is footage from a show about 15 years ago.

My friend Rebecca showed me this very funny website, where ordinary web surfers suggest captions for recent news photos. There are hundreds of them on here, and new ones every day.

The site is an equal-opportunity lampooner, so no one is really immune. But if you are in the mood, they are very funny. I am always amazed at what a strong sense of humor so many internet surfers possess.

Here were a few of my favorites: They can all be found at http://punditkitchen.com

What fun! The original Ghostbusters are planning a reunion movie! Here is a link for more info

I loved the original movie, which Cathy and I watched in the now-gone Lewis and Clark Theater near Sea Tac Airport. My five kids were all born after the release, so they only know the film (and it's sequal) from VHS and DVD. A new movie is sure to generate quite a renewed Ghostbusters buzz in the community. Maybe we can all see this film together down at the new Regal Cinema Theater at the Landing!

A new Renton family, transplanted from Arizona, shares their first-hand discoveries of Renton in this this up-beat, artistic, and interesting blog.

The blog entries chronicle the experiences of "misslynar", as she takes in our sights and entertainment, and writes descriptively about them. Her photography is very nice as well.

Ah, summer time. When the surfers and their SHARKS frolic in the waters off Florida. This photo ran on MSNBC today, with an interview by the photographer who got the lucky shot.

( It truly appears to be a lucky shot... not a hoax.)

Having grown up an hour from Santa Cruz in California, I used to enjoy everything about the beach except for the idea of the sharks which occasionally dined on surfers and their equipment (usually mistaking them for seals.) The movie "Jaws", which came out when I was twelve, didn't really help any of us feel more secure in Great White country.

But statistically, there is virtually no risk of being bitten by a shark compared to all the other hazards we face in life. And shark populations are diminishing so seriously, that in some areas there are only 20 percent as many sharks as there were when I was in high school.... often due to overfishing on both the sharks and their food sources.

Fun summertime picture, don't you think?

My informed friend (and fellow Rentonite) Rebecca pointed out this story to me. Yahoo news media is doing it's part to help us sort out fact from fiction. It turns out real archaeologists say they don't really carry whips.

My son Andy (age 21) asked me how Archaeologists can fight off mummies if they don't really carry whips. The Yahoo article forgot to cover this question. This is so disillusioning.

Here's much of what a mother has to say every day, in under three minutes, to the tune of William Tell Overture. This musical number could be on Broadway. Enjoy!

Fellow Disneyland-lovers may recall the familiar baritone voice that has welcomed monorail passengers with the words "You are riding aboard the NEW MARK FIVE Monorail" for over 20 years now.

So, I am glad to see that the old "New Mark V" is finally going to be updated.

Now, if Seattle Center could only find a way to replace its even-older monorail trains...

Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose in to other people's business. Several members did not approve of her extra curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing.

Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny... he said nothing.

Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house...walked home...and left it there all night.

Renton Chiropractor Randy Baze (Baze Chiropractic) grew up around horses with his brother Russell. While Randy Baze studied the science of healing horses with chiropractic methods, and ultimately the science of healing humans, his brother Russell became thoroughbred racing's winningest Jockey in history.
